Someone who inquired about my tarot reading services have been sending me several questions via SMS since yesterday.
Normally, I don’t disclose details of my conversations with clients as professional courtesy. However, these are questions that many potential tarot reading clients may have wondered about, at one time or another, but were hesitant to ask tarot readers they approached. I have answered similar questions before.
I think these questions and the answers I gave are worth sharing to give people who would like a tarot consultation a better idea on what (and what not) to expect in a reading. I’m reproducing the text messages I received and the actual answers I gave.
I met a reader just a while ago. But it seems he doesn’t know what his cards mean. And he looks annoy.
(I made some slight edits on the sender’s spelling, but I’m not sure if the sender meant “he looks annoyed” or “he looks annoying” in that last statement. I didn’t inquire what the sender meant by it.)
I’m sorry to hear that. I think a reader should be mindful of how they communicate to the client. We owe our clients that.
How do you do your reading?
My clients will ask me a question; sometimes I’ll ask for clarifications to get the context behind that question. Then I ask them to select cards and I will interpret the cards to answer that question.
I rarely do very general readings without a question asked because I find it better if I will interpret the cards within the context of my client’s situation. I’m not a psychic so cold readings don’t work that well for me.
What if the tarot readings have different interpretations from two tarot readers? Why is that?
(I’m assuming she asked the same questions to two readers and got different answers.)
Because a reading will always be a subjective interpretation. It’ll be based on the experience and mindset of the reader. No two readers are alike so they might interpret the cards differently.
In a reading, the client should not just listen passively but also participate in getting the answer because there might be a time when a reader may be affected by personal biases. We readers try to avoid that but readings, by their nature, cannot be objective.
Which one should I follow?
Which one do you think makes sense to you? You are not obliged to follow what a tarot reader says.
What we give are not so different from advise from other people: listen to what we say, decide if it makes sense to you, and choose whether or not you should follow it. Don’t let the cards dictate your life choices.
In closing, I would like to point out that the answers I gave are specific to my habits and preferences as a tarot reader. I also frequently point out that different readers follow different styles; what works for one may not work for another. Clients, especially those who will be read for the first time, should not be afraid to ask questions to readers to help set expectations. Readers should not brush off inquiries like these from potential clients.
